MYTHOLOGICAL STORY OF VASTUSHASTRA – THE STORY OF VASTUPURUSHA

Lord Brahma is consider to be the creator of universe, after creating universe he decided to experiment with one of his of his creation (a creature which was later on termed as Vastu Purusha). This creation expanded rapidly and almost covered entire earth, and ate everything that came in his path.

Shiva and Vishnu (Two other Hindu Gods) asked Brahma to do something before everything was destroyed by this Creature. Brahma realized his mistake and called the Astha Dikapalakas, the Gods of the eight cardinal directions. Together they overpowered the Great Monster and held it flat against the earth. Then Brahma jumped in the middle and held the monster down. With the help of another 40 gods this monster was pin down to earth. All of these gods appear in classic Vastu Mandala (a chart depicting the position of all these gods in various directions when they held this monster) this was termed as Vastu Grid.

Then the Monster cried. You created me like this. So why am I being punished for what you made me? Brahma offered him a compromise and made the Monster immortal with the boon that he would be worshipped by any mortal that builds a structure on earth. He was named Vastu Purusha. 

The various gods that held the Vastu Purusha at various corners were assigned with those particular directions. So Lord Brahma occupied the center position which is mainly kept open to sky, this can be one of the reasons of courtyard planning.

Fire God got South East position; Water God got North east position and so on. As per the position of God’s got fixed so did the use of various activities in the building. It carries a slight variation as per astrological chart of the person who will be living in the house.
